ABOUT ME
My name is Cindy Yu, and I'm a senior at the University of Michigan. I grew up in San Diego, California where I did gymnastics for a decade and competed in Varsity pole vault for four years, serving as team captain my senior year. My interest in business, coupled with my passion for sports, inspired me to pursue a degree in Sport Management and minor in Business.
I have been a marketing intern for the Michigan Athletic Department since my sophomore year. The previous year, I led a team of eight interns in planning and executing semester-long marketing and promotional projects to increase attendance. I improve game-day fan experience in sports such as football, basketball and hockey by handling giveways, raffles and both half-time and intermission contests to implement promotional plans and highlight sponsorships.
On campus, I am also involved in Collegiate DECA, Michigan Advertising & Marketing and Sport Business Association as Executive Vice President, Account Director and Brand Committee Member, respectively. At the Collegiate DECA State Career Development Conference, I placed first in both the Sport & Entertainment Marketing and Human Resource Management case studies, as well as second in Fashion Merchandise & Marketing.
During my sophomore year, I served as the President of the student government of my residence hall, North Quad Hall Council. I ran meetings and organized events such as a a Chicago trip, Winter Wonderland holiday experience, laser tag and movie premiere under a $10,000 budget to strengthen the North Quad community. In addition, I served on the Residence Hall Associations (RHA) Allocations and Budget Committee, where I made recommendations on funding proposals and reviewed all financial documents of the organization to manage a $225,000 RHA General Budget.
I have also had the opportunity to work for IMG in the Academy and College divisions. As a Public Relations Intern at IMG Academy, I drafted press releases and media alerts, hosted international media personnel while coordinating on-site media visits and created the IMG Academy Insider platform, generating over 1,000 likes or followers each on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. As a Property Assistant at IMG College, I helped manage over 50 sponsorship accounts associated with Michigan Athletics. On football game days, I also coordinated IMG's corporate sponsorship hospitality tent.
Last summer, I worked at Starcom MediaVest Group in Chicago as a strategy intern. I helped develop the media strategies for Bass Pro Shops, Chicago Fire, Dairy Queen and hhgregg. Additionally, I devised a $5 million media plan recommendation for ESPN's College Football Playoff campaign.
In my free time, I enjoy hiking, yoga, traveling and writing. I have traveled to all seven continents and I currently work at a fitness studio in Ann Arbor. I wrote two cover stories for Inside Gymnastics Magazine and have covered the Michigan women's gymnastics team for the past three seasons for the Michigan Daily. Click here to view my publications.
